CHARITY WORK

Gary is a keen supporter of many charities both local and national. The main charity that Gary is involved with is SKCIN.

SKCIN was set up by the family of Karen Clifford after she passed away on New Year's Eve 2005 after a courageous battle against skin cancer. Karen's family where dismayed to discover that while a few specialist organisations existed there were in fact no specific all encompassing organisations with national aspirations.

Together with medical professionals at the Queens Medical Centre, Nottingham, the family and friends have set out to establish what is hoped to be the first high profile charitable organisation targeting this specific form of cancer in the UK. The principle objective of the charity is to ensure that the danger of over-exposure to the sun is given greater profile with the emphasis on education resulting in the vital early detection of the disease.

Gary got on board with the charity as the English Golf Union are involved with SKCIN. The main reason behind this is to raise the profile of skin cancer across the world and with golfers spending a considerable amount of time in the sun it was seen as a perfect way to promote SKCIN. The English Golf Union, the sun cream manufacturer Uvistat and SKCIN have combined to launch a unique skin cancer awareness campaign aimed at 750,000 golf club members in over 2000 golf clubs throughout England. Posters for display on notice boards and in locker rooms featuring England's top amateur golfer and SKCIN's latest sporting Patron, Gary Wolstenholme, will be distributed in spring next year warning club members about the dangers of over exposure to the sun. The EGU magazine will also support the campaign as will the English Women's Golf Union for whom alternative posters have been produced and sent out this year displaying England Girls international Hannah Barwood, winner of the 2008 English Women's Championship.
